Stevia! A great way to replace SUGAR in our diet!

I know when I mentioned to you that you need to cut out sugar, chocolate, ice-cream and all those yummy things we feel we can’t live without many of you wonder if the torture of not having these things is worse than having Endometriosis! I know it feels like it sometimes!

I for one was terribly addicted to anything sweet. My worst must have been chocolate and I could easily consume a slab of chocolate within a 10minute sitting! Scary when I think about it! Now that I know how much sugar lowers our immune system and thereby reduces our chance to heal, I have become almost pedantic about checking food labels and the amount of sugar that is in what we eat. Wherever I can replace sugar or not use it, I do but sometimes we just want something sweet! – usually that time of the month for me!! 🙂

Well, I went searching for a way we could still have something sweet in our diet and discovered a great plant called Stevia. Now, this is a completely natural plant and believe it or not, it is really sweet! I didn’t really believe it and put several drops in my tea and couldn’t actually drink the tea as it was too sweet! Can you believe it? Too sweet!

Well, I naturally became curious about Stevia and as usual looked into it further. Stevia has heaps of other benefits apart from replacing the sugar content in our diet!

  • Strengthens our immune system
  • Fights bacteria – especially in the mouth. That means less tooth decay and mouth sores!
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • It helps our digestion, reduces gas and bloating and helps with heartburn
  • Helps with Dandruff – just put a few drops with your shampoo!
  • Can dramatically reduce wrinkles!

Wow! Who would’ve thought you could get so much out of one little plant! I must definitely get one to add to my herb garden! The wrinkles thing sounds brilliant!

I personally got the drops for now (plant still to come!)as I felt most of my craving for sugar was in the tea that I drink all day!

Let me know your thoughts!

Thank you 🙂 I did find it confusing and sometimes it can overlap to a point of not being able to eat anything. I think we just have to go with what feels right for us.

    Hi Melissa,
It is a great work that you are doing here! Just a quick note – according to ayurveda you are most probably vata type – according to things you are saying and dried fruits are not good for you. Agree with the article in kefir – as endometriosis is kapha disorder (vata pushing kapha), milk products should be excluded. I started with Candida diet, but now exploring the whole world of Ayurveda – it seems to me that modern nutritioanal science is coming from it… For example, in Candida diet pumpkin is prohibited as high glycemic index. Howhever, in Chinese medicine and ayurveda is it encouraged. It is only now scientists learn about glycemic load in addition to glycemin index which makes it a healthy choice and even reccomended to diabetics as it can repair insulin. Quite amazing. Thanks again!

I used to have tea first thing in the morning every day.
But after following your blog I made few changes to my diet.
Now in the morning I have goji berries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries .

The cranberries are sweet enough for me and I don’t feel sugar deprived

Thanks a ton Melissa, I just got your 101 recipes and hope to follow them.

God bless you for your amazing work 🙂

Hi Charlotte and Gavin and glad you made the switch too 🙂 I find chocolate hard to replace! Have you ever eaten real cocoa though? You will be suprised at how bitter it really tastes without the sugar and milk products in it! I have gradually stopped buying the chocolate – so it doesn’t even tempt me in the cupboard! After 3months of using other options – dates, figs and other dried fruit, I honestly don’t even miss chocolate. It doesn’t even taste as good when I do eat it!

I want to tell you that your information is spot on. WE decided some months ago to make lifestyle changes and have been very pleased with the results. The problem for both of us was the horrible addiction to sugar and in my case it was Kool Aid of all things. Well, I did some research hoping to find a sweetener that was not created in a laboratory (many of them by accident) and we have made the switch, without pain and suffering. I’ve gone from a cup of sugar (yikes!) in two quarts of beverage to ONE TEASPOON OF LIQUID STEVIA! Sure, we could do without the artificial flavors and we both drink our quota of distilled water but we like sweet beverages (tea included) and can’t stand soda at all with the high fructose corn sweetener which is used by virtually every processed food maker due to the cheap cost. We don’t want any of the artificial sweeteners which I believe are worse than sugar. I know that Flax seed and working out has made some difference but I have noted that his blood pressure is lower than it has been in perhaps fifteen years! We both feel SO much better now. Please, let me know if you come upon anything to help with the chocolate. If I buy it, I eat it! I’d love to have an alternative. Thanks for helping others find a way.
